Frequently Asked Questions

Getting Started & Core Features

Start by describing the main subject or elements you want in your pattern, for example, florals, geometric shapes, or animal prints. Then add details about the style, colour palette, and mood you'd like. Natural, descriptive language works best, no special formatting needed!

If you want even more control, think about:

  • Colour scheme: soft pastels, bold contrasts, or earthy tones?
  • Composition: do you want the elements close together or evenly spaced?
  • Texture: flat and clean, or painterly and organic?

The more specific you are, the closer your results will match your vision.

Example prompts:

  • "Vintage-inspired Hawaiian print with soft, faded palm fronds, delicate orchids, and subtle ocean waves, in muted beige, soft olive, and dusty peach."
  • "Soft floral nursery pattern with tiny daisies, tulips, and leaves in blush pink, pale sage, buttercream yellow, and ivory. The flowers should be delicate and evenly scattered for baby bedding."
  • "Woodland botanical pattern featuring mushrooms, moss, and forest plants drawn in graphite and softly tinted with earthy watercolor hues like umber, olive, and pale ochre. The composition should feel grounded and slightly whimsical."

You can write prompts in any language. Our AI assistant in the bottom right corner can also help you write and refine prompts.

You can edit your pattern using the Edit and Recolor tools. Edit lets you make precise changes to specific parts of your design while keeping the pattern perfectly seamless. You can remove unwanted elements, add new ones, change colours of specific objects, adjust details, or refine parts of the design without starting over. Recolor is used when you want to change the overall colours of the pattern while keeping the design and layout exactly the same. You can generate new colourways using AI suggestions, preset palettes, custom HEX codes, or text instructions like "make the background white" or "use warm autumn tones."

Yes. You can upload your own patterns as long as they are in square format as a PNG or JPG file. Besides fixing seams of AI generated patterns from Midjourney, Gemini, ChatGPT, hand drawn scans, or broken repeats, you can also use your own designs to recolor, restyle, edit, vectorise, upscale, and preview on products. This makes it easy to refine existing patterns and prepare them for production without starting from scratch.

Use our free Seamless Checker to preview how your pattern repeats at different zoom levels. It helps you spot any visible seams, mismatched edges, or misalignments before finalising your design.

Create from Image is best when you want to turn a fabric photo, vintage swatch, product illustration, or reference image into a new seamless pattern. The AI recreates the design based on your image, so it may make some changes while capturing the overall style, colours, and feel.

Fix Seams is used when your pattern already exists but does not repeat cleanly. It keeps the centre of your image intact and only adjusts the edges to make the pattern perfectly seamless.

Edit is for targeted changes inside an existing seamless pattern, such as removing an object, changing colours of the selected parts, adding elements, or refining details, while keeping the overall pattern and repeat unchanged.

Recolor changes the colours of your pattern while keeping the original design, layout, and seamless repeat exactly the same. It is perfect for creating new colorways, seasonal collections, or matching client palettes using AI suggestions, presets, custom palettes, or exact HEX codes.

Restyle changes the artistic style of your pattern while keeping the original layout intact. It transforms the overall look and feel of the design, for example turning a flat floral into a watercolor, sketch, or painterly version, without changing the composition.

Auto Palette, available on the Standard plan, works like a shuffle tool. You simply click a button and the AI generates creative, random colour variations, making it perfect for inspiration and exploring different colour schemes.

Custom Palette, available on Pro and Business plans, works like a steering tool. You can guide the AI using Palette Mode by entering your target HEX codes or creating a custom palette, or by using Describe Mode where you type instructions like "warm autumn palette" or "change background to white." The AI then uses these inputs as a strong reference to generate the pattern closer to your desired result.

The AI is designed to target your specific colors as closely as possible. While generative models may introduce slight tonal variations to maintain artistic blending, this feature gets you 90% of the way to your target palette, significantly reducing the time needed for final color correction in post-processing.

Yes, color separation is available on the Business plan. You can export files with color separated layers in SVG and Adobe Illustrator (.ai) formats, as well as individual colour TIFF files delivered as a zipped folder, making them ready for rotary, screen, and production printing.

PatternedAI is not designed for creating standalone logos, but you can generate an AI logo element for a seamless pattern using the Create From Elements tool by clicking Create AI Element. You can also include text in your patterns or upload your own logo and turn it into a seamless design using the same tool. If you want patterns with text based elements, you can also try the Advanced Model in the Create From Text tool, which can incorporate words directly into the design.

Files, Export & Commercial Use

Choose your output format based on your production needs. Standard and Pro plans include high resolution 300 DPI PNG files for digital and direct to print production.

Business plans also include:

  • SVG with color separated layers in a seamless scalable vector format
  • Adobe Illustrator (.ai) files with color separated layers ready for production
  • Individual colour TIFF files delivered as a zipped folder, ideal for screen printing separations

Files open directly in Illustrator, Photoshop, Procreate, and other standard design tools.

Use the Pattern Upscaler tool to boost your image quality up to 8,200 × 8,200 px while keeping it perfectly seamless. Simply choose your upscale level (from 2× to 16×) and export a print-ready file. Credit cost varies by scale and output, and upscaling 3× or higher requires a Pro or Business subscription. Alternatively, Business plans include vector exports such as SVG, Adobe Illustrator (.ai), and individual colour TIFF separations, which are ideal for professional printing and production workflows.

Yes. Every pattern is royalty-free and yours to use on unlimited commercial products.
