Pattern Builder is a powerful design tool that puts you in the driver's seat when creating seamless patterns. While our Text-to-Pattern AI tool brilliantly generates complete patterns from prompts, Pattern Builder shines when you need precise control over individual elements and their arrangement. Whether you're working with existing brand assets, creating new elements with AI, or adding typography, Pattern Builder gives you the precision and flexibility to craft exactly what you envision.

Pattern Builder excels in situations where you need:

To begin creating with Pattern Builder, simply select "Pattern Builder" from the Design tools menu. You'll see a design workspace on the left where your elements appear, and a live preview of your repeating pattern on the right.

1. Upload Your Existing Images

The quickest way to start is by clicking "Add image" to upload your own graphics. This method works beautifully with:

• Company logos
• Graphics purchased from Creative Market or Envato
• Custom illustrations you've already created
• Brand icons and symbols

Pro tip: PNG files with transparent backgrounds work best, giving you maximum flexibility in layering and arranging your elements.

2. Create Custom AI Elements

Don't have the perfect element? No problem! Click "Create AI Element" to generate exactly what you need. The system provides helpful prompt suggestions, or you can write your own.

Writing effective prompts:

• Describe both the object and the style you want
• Be specific about artistic techniques: "watercolor pine tree" or "flat vector rainbow"
• The AI automatically creates transparent backgrounds, but you can specify this for clarity
• Each AI element generation uses 15 credits

Examples of great prompts:

• "Watercolor pine tree on a transparent background"
• "Romantic colorful pastel illustration of a rainbow in flat vector style"
• "Minimalist geometric star in gold metallic style"

Maintaining consistency: When creating multiple elements, keep your style descriptions uniform across all prompts. If you're creating a watercolor pattern, include "watercolor" in each element's prompt. Since the system doesn't store past prompts, consider keeping them in a document for future reference.

3. Add Text Elements

Typography can transform your pattern from a visual design to powerful branding asset. Click "Add text" to incorporate words, slogans, or messages directly into your design. This feature is invaluable for:

• Reinforcing brand identity with company names
• Celebrating milestones or anniversaries
• Adding motivational quotes or key messages
• Creating text-only typographic patterns

Typography options:

• Choose from six professional font families
• Adjust font weight for emphasis
• Control size to create hierarchy

Want a unique font? Use the "Create AI Element" feature to generate custom typography. Try prompts like: "A logo saying 'Patterned AI' in handwritten font on orange color"

Element Manipulation

Once your elements are in the workspace, click on any element to access these editing options:

• Duplicate - Quickly create copies for repetition
• Transparency - Adjust opacity for layering effects
• Delete - Remove unwanted elements
• Flip - Mirror elements horizontally or vertically
• Layer order - Arrange which elements appear in front or behind

Spacing Control

The Spacing tool is a game-changer for pattern composition. Instead of manually scaling each element, use this single control to adjust the distance between all elements simultaneously. More spacing creates smaller, more dispersed elements, while less spacing results in larger, denser patterns.

Pattern Layouts

Choose from three composition layouts to find the perfect arrangement:

• Layout 1: Ideal for busy patterns with 6+ different elements
• Layouts 2 & 3: Perfect for logo-centric designs or patterns with 1-2 focal elements

Switching between layouts takes just one click, so experiment freely to find what works best.

Background Options

Set your pattern's foundation with the background color tool:

• Choose colors manually from the palette
• Enter specific HEX codes for brand accuracy
• Keep backgrounds transparent if needed

• Zoom: Adjust how many times your tile repeats in the preview

Pattern Tile (4096x4096 pixels):

• The fundamental repeating unit of your pattern
• Seamlessly tileable in any direction
• Perfect for fabric printing, wallpaper, or when final dimensions are unknown
• Send this to manufacturers who will adjust sizing as needed

Repeat Image (custom resolution):

• A complete design sized to your exact specifications
• Enter your desired pixel dimensions in the Resolution window
• Ready for immediate use at the specified size
• Note: This image itself isn't seamless at the edges

Pro tip: Always confirm tile size in centimeters or inches with your printing facility, and request a sample before full production.

Create Variations with AI

Take your pattern further by clicking "Create variation with AI." This sends your design to Pattern Remixer where you can:

• Apply different visual styles through Image Variation
• Blend your pattern with other images using Image Mixing
• Explore new creative directions while maintaining your original composition
